Minister Usman : Tourism to Recover This Year

In comments before a visiting group of German tour agents and travel writers in Jakarta last Monday, Minister of Tourism, Art and Culture, Mr. Marzuki Usman predicted that tourism would recover in Indonesia by the middle of this year, when political uncertainties were resolved following the national elections.

In response to suggestions from the German visitors that Indonesia should do more to promote its tourism industry and undertake steps to provide more information on the national political situation, Minister Usman bemoaned the current lack of promotional funds which has caused the closure of embassies and Indonesian tourism promotion offices.

Quoted by Antara News Agency, Minister Usman said: "A restoration of political stability will have a positive impact on all sectors of the economy. In 1999, we are optimistic that we can attract 3.5 million foreign tourists, just like in 1998." (Sumber : Bali Discovery, 23 Januari 1999).
