New Indonesian minister named

President Abdurrahman Wahid of Indonesia has appointed a new forestry minister, Marzuki Usman, following the resignation on Friday of the former holder of the post, Nurmahmudi Ismail.

Mr Usman, a former tourism minister, is due to be inaugurated on Saturday later today, Saturday.

The BBC Jakarta correspondent says it's widely believed that Mr Ismail was dismissed because he is a senior member of the small Justice party, which is campaigning for Mr Wahid's resignation over allegations of corruption.

But officials said Mr Wahid wants improvements in the work of the forestry ministry, which faces huge environmental problems caused by illegal logging and fires. (Sumber : BBC London, 16 Maret 2001)
